Haliburton-based company Maple Key Media has announced its acquisition of the Haliburton Echo, Minden Times, Bancroft This Week, and Barry’s Bay This Week from Sun Media. It has also purchased The Highlander Newspaper.

Maple Key Media’s director, Bram Lebo, will head up the group as publisher. He confirmed the company will retain existing staff and has no plans to close any of the newspapers.

“We are excited to bring these papers back under local ownership,” said Lebo. “These newspapers are vital to our communities and we accept that responsibility. Our focus will be on delivering the news through quality and innovative editorial content.”

“We are asking our communities to bear with us during this period of transition,” said Lebo. “This is a big change, but we’re confident in our decision to make this purchase and hope our readers are as excited as we are for what the future holds.”

Distance sled finally got to get back on snow yesterday. Dogs & Hank were thrilled to be done with the ATV. Wasn't a dull run either, 8 moose hanging out together on one remote section of trail. That section might not get run much this winter!

The Day the Rob Ford Story Stopped Being Funny
esquire.com
Of the four men in the most famous image of Ford hanging out in the drug house, one is dead, two are in jail and the other remains the Mayor of Toronto.
“The reason I can’t laugh about Rob Ford anymore is that he has become a threat to the basic assumptions that allow politics to function. If this guy isn’t in jail, why bother having police at all? Why not just round up poor people whenever powerful people get the urge? The least we can do, it seem to me, is let everyone currently serving a sentence for drug use out of prison. Otherwise, the whole system is pure hypocrisy. Rob Ford is a threat to the still scared idea of equality under the law. Not even Will Ferrell could make that funny.”

Maple Lake Ontario Haliburton Highlands 10 Day Weather Forecast – November 15 – 24

It looks as if the last of the mild weather will be passing through the Haliburton Highlands tomorrow, Saturday November 16th with a clear and mild day. By Sunday, the winds will pick up and clouds and showers will move in and stay through Monday. The temperatures continue their downward slide through Tuesday–there is a snow shower possible and the high will be just 26°F degrees, with a low of 18°F.

Though there is a break on Wednesday with partly sunny skies, the high will be 30°F and the low 18°F. Expect about the same weather on Thursday (see above for details). Next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all have highs ranging from 24°F – 28°F, with Friday being sunny and cold, the high 24°F, and a frosty low of 11°F. Saturday, expect periods of snow, a high of 28°F and the low just °15F, and Sunday, November 24 the high will be 25°F, the low a frigid 11°F– a mostly cloudy day is expected with snow showers.

Read on for an activity that sounds a whole lot more fun than talking about the weather! 😉

I can’t think of a single thing to say about the 14-Day Weather Trend for West Guilford/ the Haliburton Highlands. It looks yucky.

Maple Syrup Harvest

Maple Syrup Harvest

A funny thing I just realized –and it’s not that there is nothing yummier than pancakes with fresh maple syrup (see above). No, what I realized is that I taught my son to pronounce the word syrup, the way I way I was taught. Despite him being 100% Midwest American he pronounces it “seer-up.’ Here in the Chicago area (and maybe the rest of the country–not sure), it is  pronounced ‘sir-up’. As I said, it is indisputable that no matter what you call it, genuine maple syrup is one of the yummiest taste sensations you’ll experience!
