Welcome to your weekend! (More events to be talked about here in a few hours!–plus later tonight, the weather for the weekend and week-to-come).

I’m sure you noted the name of this blog. Not much thought needed to go into naming it as it is written on behalf of the Haliburton Highlands and more specifically when an occasion arises, the Maple Lake area, which I believe is properly referred to as the Township of Dysart et al.

There’s a fantastic FREE opportunity, Young Eagle Flights for kids ages 8-17, to fly for free out of Stanhope Airport this weekend which calls to mind some of my own recollections of the airport.

My memories of Maple Lake–and one cannot separate Maple Lake from the airport if you take a quick peek on the map*–is how awesome it is when a plane takes off over the water. I’ll be in my default place–in the lake–hear the sound of the small aircraft engine, and look up to see the undercarriage of said small aircraft zipping by overhead, then watch the plane as it disappears into the distance.

I’ve always loved that. However, when I was younger and my mom was around she expressed her displeasure with the noise. That left me perplexed but I’ll leave it at noting that we all have our own reactions/perceptions of things large and small. So dear mum would gently curse the plane flying just a short distance above us and I would silently cheer for the plane and think “Wow!”
My mum cannot make it up to the lake anymore but every time a plane flies out of Stanhope airport I think of her–then I think, “Cool!”

Weekend Weather May 29 - 30. 2010

Welcome to your weekend! Apologies *again* for being tardy. We really need to get past this May /June insanity phase with its graduations, birthdays, greeting card holidays, a national holiday… ’nuff said.

Your weekend in the Haliburton Highlands looks perfectly gorgeous with this evening — Saturday being sunny with a temperature of 70°F. Overnight will be comfortable with a low of 54°F.

Sunday morning, you’ll be greeted with sun and a temperature of 64°F with temperatures steadily climbing until by afternoon it should be 79°F. Simply a beautiful day on Sunday with a high of 79°F. It will stay clear throughout Sunday evening with some cloudy periods overnight and a comfortable low temp of 59°F.

There is no precipitation expected from Saturday evening through Monday morning.

Weather May 31 -June 5

There is a chance of thundershowers on Monday, May 31. The high temperature will be 26°C but it will feel like 30°C (!) Overnight, expect temperatures to drop to a seasonal 15°C. There could be 2-4mm of rain accumulation.

Tuesday, you should look for isolated showers, a high temperature of 24°C and a low overnight once again of 15°C. There should be less than 1mm of rain accumulated.

Wednesday, the Haliburton area will have have cloudy periods and a cooler high of 22°C. Overnight gets a bit nippy with a low of 11°C. No rain, though.

Thursday, June 3 expect variable cloudiness and a high of 21°C. The overnight low dips way down to 9°C. Expect 2-4mm of precipitation.

Friday will be a day of isolated showers especially in the afternoon, with a high of 22°C. Overnight temperatures drop to 13°C and there may be up to 1-3mm rain accumulation.

Light rain is expected on Saturday, June 5. The high during the daylight hours is expected to be 22°C.  The overnight low should be about 13°C.

Close to 10mm rain accumulation is expected.

Welcome to the Victoria Day weekend!
First off a big thanks to Mother Nature for the rain not really affecting the long weekend in cottage country!

Update/ The Bug Report is being published now so I’ve added it in with the photographs (below).

Still, the wet weather isn’t affecting cottagers. By the noon hour on Friday, traffic was almost at a dead stop on the 400. Sergeant Dave Woodford is with the Ontario Provincial Police and he said he saw traffic building even earlier than that. “Early this morning we’ve just seen trailer after trailer. A lot of boat trailers and drivers hauling the ATV’s behind their vehicles.”

Woodford warns that for those planning on getting in their boat, the water is still cold despite the recent hot weather. “Make sure that you have extra clothing on if you’re in your boat. Take extra caution out there because if anything happens and you go overboard or something like that, you don’t want to have hypothermia.”

Let’s get to the weather forecast shall we?

Short Term Weather Haliburton Highlands

Tonight– Friday look for cloudy skies with clear breaks. The low temperature will be an unseasonably warm  63°F.

Waking up Saturday morning expect it to be cloudy with sunny breaks with a temperature of 66°F. By Saturday afternoon temperatures climb to 77°F and there may be an isolated shower or two. Saturday evening brings variable cloudiness and a low of 73°F.

Only a trace of precipitation is expected in this 24-hour period.

Victoria Day & Long Term Weather Forecast

Sunday May 23, looks lovely with some cloudy periods and a comfortable temperature of 23°C.* Sunday night’s low will be 12°C.

On Monday, the 24th of May look for a mainly sunny day and more great temperatures for cottagers with a high of 26°C.  The low overnight is to be 13° C. The lakes should warm up quickly this year if this trend continues (which I hope it does!)

Tuesday will be a bright and sunny day, a precursor to some really warm weather coming up on Wednesday. The high temperature on Tuesday will be 27°F (!) and the low overnight 13°F.

Wednesday will be a sunny day and the temperature will be  28°C.  The overnight low will be 15°C. Love those cool cottage nights after a hot day!

Thursday will be mainly sunny with a high of 26°C and a low of 15°C overnight.

On Friday the mild trend continues with a high temperature of 24°C and an overnight low of 14°C.

There is no rain in the Sunday- Friday forecast!

Southern Ontario Weekend Weather - May 14.15.2010

Welcome to your weekend!

Light rain is in the forecast for Friday evening with temperatures around 45°F. Overnight Friday the light rain continues with a low of 41°F.

By Saturday morning the rain is being forecast as “light” with a temperature of 41°F which is rather brisk, IMO. Precipitation in this 24-hour period is expected to be 1.25 inches.

Saturday night, the rain eases to cloudiness and the temperature inches up to 55°F. Cloudy periods continue to about midnight then the skies clear. Temperatures should be in the very low 40′s°F.

Long Term Forecast for Southern Ontario May 14- 21. 2010

Sunday looks like a beautiful day. It will be sunny with a high temperature of 64°F and an overnight low of 43°F. No rain is in the forecast.

Monday, expect cloudy periods with a high  of 68°F and and overnight low of 39°F. There may be a trace of rain.

Tuesday, the showers return. Expect a soggy day with a high temperature of 63°F and a low of 50°F with about 0.1 inch of rain accumulation.

Wednesday is a near-repeat of Tuesday. It will be cloudy with showers and a high of 63°F, an overnight low of 46°F and about 0.1 inch of rain accumulation.

Thursday, expect isolated showers in the afternoon & evening, a high of 72°F and a low of 50°F overnight. Again about 0.1 inch of rain accumulation is predicted.

For Friday isolated showers return with a high of 72° and a low of 54°F. Again, about 0.1 inch of rain accumulation is predicted.

That is a pretty soggy week but at least for the most part, the temperatures are seasonal.

Weekend Weather May 7 -8

Welcome to your weekend. From what I’m reading, southern Ontario is to get some “interesting’ weather this weekend–all of it somehow related to precipitation and wind. Sure sounds like a classic spring to me!

Tonight– Friday overnight look for a low temperature of 41°F with light rain.

Saturday morning expect cloudiness with showers and a high of 43°F.  By Saturday afternoon the temperature takes a slight dip down to 41°F with precipitation in the form of showers.

Saturday evening expect scattered flurries and a low of 34°F. The 24-hour precipitation accumulation outlook is to be 0.8 inches from Friday overnight through Saturday evening.

Long Term Forecast May 9 - 14 2010

On Sunday look for variable cloudiness with a high of 45°F and a low temperature of 27°F. No precipitation is forecast.

On Monday, though there will not be rain there will be cloudy periods. The high temperature will be 50°F and the low overnight will be a COLD 22°F!

Tuesday expect variable cloudiness and a high temperature of 52°F and an overnight low of 29°F. The 24-hour snow/rain forecast is for up to 1 inch.

Wednesday will be a rainy day with a high temperature of 54°F and an overnight low of 39°F.  There could be up to .4 inch of snow and/or rain accumulation.

Thursday will bring isolated showers, a high of 54°F and an overnight low of 41°F. There might be a trace of precipitation.

Friday brings scattered showers but a comfortable high of 63°F. The low overnight will be 45°F and there could be up to .25 inch precipitation accumulation.

Weekend Weather May 1-2. 2010

No way around it, Saturday is a rainy day whether it is (was)  morning isolated showers, the thunder showers in the afternoon or the prediction of “cloudy with showers” overnight Saturday. Temperatures will range from a high of 72°F to a low overnight o f 59°F.

Sunday’s forecast calls for more rain–light rain until mid-morning moving to “cloudy with showers” by afternoon with it tapering off to “variable cloudiness”  just before sunset. The high temperature will be 64°F on Sunday with an overnight low of  54°F. Precipitation accumulation is to be just a trace on Saturday and about 0.3 inches on on Sunday.

Weather Southern Ontario May 2 - May 7 2010

Monday is to be a mainly sunny day with a pleasant high of 64°F and a low of 48°F and about 0.1 inches of precipitation.

Expect isolated showers on Tuesday with a high temperature of 61°F and an overnight low of 46°F. There may be a trace of precipitation accumulation.

Wednesday, expect cloudy periods, a high of 68 °F and an overnight low of 43 °F. There will be up to 0.1 inch of rain.

Isolated showers are predicted for Thursday with a daytime high of 63°F and an overnight low of 46°F. There may be a trace amount of rain.

Finally, Friday is forecast to be cloudy with showers. The high temperature is expected to be 59°F with an overnight low of 41°F  and a trace of precipitation.

Haliburton Concert Series

Lucille Chung

May 1st is the first concert for the year, and features pianist Lucille Chung. Lucille was born in Montreal and is now based in New York. She has performed all over the world with more than 50 orchestras. The concert is at 7:30p.m. The three-concert classical music series is sold only as a subscription. The total cost for three concerts is $50 for adults and $25 for students. Welcome to the weekend! It is set to be a nice one overall so lets look at the details.

Tonight-Friday will be clear with a low temperature of 34°F.

Saturday morning will be bright and sunny and as the day goes on it will remain so with temperatures in the afternoon climbing to a very comfortable 63°F. Evening will remain clear and overnight, the temperatures drop to 39°F.

Long-term Weather Haliburton Highlands - April 25 - 30

On Sunday, look for some sun in the morning but by afternoon expect isolated showers and a high temperature of 57°F. The low Sunday night is to be 39°F. Precipitation accumulation is to be about 0.1 inch.

Isolated showers are again expected on Monday, April 26, with a high temperature of 59°F and a low overnight of 43°F. Only a trace of precipitation is expected.

Tuesday will be a mainly sunny day. Expect a high temperature of 57°F  and a low overnight of 39°F. There is no precipitation in the forecast from Tuesday through Thursday.

Wednesday expect cloudy periods with a high of 57°F and a low overnight of 37°F.

Thursday’s forecast nearly mirrors Wednesday with cloudy periods, a  high temperature of 57°F, and an overnight low of 39°F.

On Friday, look for isolated showers, a high of 61°F and an overnight low of 41°F. Precipitation accumulation is expected to be about 0.1 inch.

Though  this evening is mainly clear with temps about 46°F, prepare yourself for a soggy, brisk Saturday. It begins with mixed precipitation overnight Friday and continues into Saturday with scattered flurries in the morning moving into mixed precipitation by Saturday afternoon. The daytime high temperature should be about 39°F. Expect mixed precipitation with flurries and wet snow throughout Saturday, possibly until midnight. Temperatures overnight will hold pretty steady at about 36°F.

Long-term Weather Haliburton & Maple Lake area 4.18.10 - 4.23.10

Sunday is a bit of an improvement over Saturday as it ushers in seasonal, pleasant weather for most of the week. The high on Sunday will be 46°F and the cloudiness will be variable. By Monday expect cloudy periods with a high of 50°F and a low of 37°F. Tuesday, expect cloudy periods with a pleasant high of 55°F and an overnight low of 39°F. Neither Monday nor Tuesday have any precipitation in their forecast.

Wednesday is a near mirror-image forecast of Tuesday–that’s not at all bad. Look for cloudy periods, a high of 55°F and an overnight low of 39°F. There could be be up to 0.1 inch of precipitation accumulation.

Thursday brings showers and clouds with a high of 52°F and a low of 37°F. There may be a trace of precipitation accumulation.

As the work-week winds down on Friday look  for cloudy periods, a high of 52°F and a low of 39°F. There is no precipitation in Friday’s forecast.

Overall, a very respectable week weather-wise though perhaps a bit short on rain for this time of year. Have a great week!

April 8, 2010 - North Central Ontario

Ontario weather - April 8, 2010

Sometimes, I miss living in Ontario throughout the year (as opposed to being a cottager). I live in the Chicago area–in the northwest suburbs to be precise, and our weather is uncannily similar to Ontario. However underneath the asphalt we are on what was prairie.
The big, beautiful tress, the massive granite walls lining the highway, the lakes, my goodness the lakes of south central Ontario a/k/a cottage country. We have none of that but we do get the weather. Since I do the forecast for the Haliburton Highlands each week (there will be a post tomorrow) and I need to know the weather forecast here at home to know for example, that at the beginning of this week I could go top-down motoring as I went from picking up my son at school–to taking him to the dentist–going to the library–all in weather in which I was comfortable in shirt-sleeves.

Today: rainy gloomy, COLD.  A day or two ago we had the same hailstorm activity that Ontario is seeing and next week we’ll have the same warm up. I’d say about 85% of the time the two regions weather is near identical with two significant differences. One, the used-to-be prairie we live on is as you would guess, flat. There is nothing geographical to cut the wind from cutting through you. And it does. I’ve never felt the wrath of the winter winds as I have in Chicagoland. Two the timing of the weather ‘events’ differs by about 36 hours.

I know that cottage country gets very cold in winter and usually there is significant snow but it’s my belief despite that that the snow actually makes the winter feel less harsh and the hills cut the windchill a bit. I realize too that Ontario and much of Canada had a mild 2009-2010 winter.  The consensus here, despite fairly consistent snowfall is that winter ‘wasn’t that bad.’

Now just like their Canadian counterparts, folks here have spring fever as I saw in photographs and read that many Canadians did last week, too. Spring can be quite fickle. Getting one dreaming of a warm spring on sunny days–and then snatching it away with snow flurries.

Don’t dispair. Here is a thumbnail of what you can expect for this weekend. I’ll  have a detailed forecast on Friday.
