Happy mid-week to everyone! My mind has been on Maple Lake this week as when the weekend finally rolls around we will be rolling in to the Highlands! Woot! It is not fun being 700 miles from paradise knowing that in another lifetime I’d only be only about 2 hours away! Family history fact: We are the only piece of the modern incarnation of our family to have moved to the U.S. It was due to work opportunity, otherwise the only place I would choose over Ontario would be someplace warm-year-round and here in the Chicago area is not it, despite it being a very nice place. Anyway…I just looked at the extended weather outlook for the Highlands and it looks fantastic! I hope Mother Nature is being kind this time because she was craptastic in late May. Not that it wasn’t beautiful because it always is. I just was so.very. cold., having not anticipated just how cold one can be when not dressed from head to toe in the wee hours of the morning in an unheated cottage. I know. I’m a wuss!

It’s a really big week coming up in the Highlands but the fun does not stop when it does. Take some time to peruse the dozens of activities in the Highlands by clicking the thumbnails above, as many great times are to be had that continue well beyond Canada Day.
We are still not sure when exactly we are going to be at Maple Lake as our siding people have the materials on order and we need to sync things up with them before departing. We have our fingers crossed but if push comes to shove I’ll end up hanging around the cottage as long as I need to.
I know for sure one activity that I don’t want to miss because 1. I’m a night owl and it runs in the afternoon, 2. it’s a farmer’s market so I can peruse great, fresh local produce EDIT/ and meat pies, cheeses and baked goods!–vast quantities of locally-cultivated EVERYTHING. And there are local community/charity booths set up, too! I am so there! Oh and 3, it’s local to me! Here’s the flyer:
Haliburton County Farmer’s Market every Friday from 1- 5 p.m. through August 31!
With so many outdoor activities available let’s check the weather, shall we? I’m posting the two-week forecast every week to be a bit more precise–though heck, it’s the weather in cottage country–it will be what it will be. EDIT/ It looks fantastic!!!
Despite the non-PC-ness of making a huge fuss over the Christian holiday, it’s still important to know what is happening in the Haliburton Highlands this weekend and beyond and what the weather will be like. scroll down and click the thumb nails for full size to find out What’s Happening in the Haliburton Highlands This Week!
Sunday, April 8 will reach a high temperature of about 55° F with a chance of showers later in the day, so bring an umbrella with your baskets and bonnets.
We rarely go anywhere on Easter Sunday but several things have changed the family dynamic landscape of late including the death of my father-in-law, our recent purchase of a car that could safely shuttle our entire family, including the dogs, all the way to grandma’s house (1 hour away) and not incidentally, the fact that grandma has a fenced-in yard and the dogs are invited! (I work from home so the two, who are Schipperke and Schip mix are not used to long periods alone–plus ‘she’ is really old and frail). So off to Wonder Lake, Illinois we’ll be on Sunday. No Reese’s PNB eggs for me this year. We are bringing a massively decadent devil’s food and fondant half ‘egg’ cake and braided (coloured) bread (both from the best bakery in the area) to dinner as well as a veggie tray. I’m hoping to cozy up to the veggie tray before doing too much damage otherwise.
