Despite the non-PC-ness of making a huge fuss over the Christian holiday, it’s still important to know what is happening in the Haliburton Highlands this weekend and beyond and what the weather will be like. scroll down and click the thumb nails for full size to find out What’s Happening in the Haliburton Highlands This Week!
Sunday, April 8 will reach a high temperature of about 55° F with a chance of showers later in the day, so bring an umbrella with your baskets and bonnets.
We rarely go anywhere on Easter Sunday but several things have changed the family dynamic landscape of late including the death of my father-in-law, our recent purchase of a car that could safely shuttle our entire family, including the dogs, all the way to grandma’s house (1 hour away) and not incidentally, the fact that grandma has a fenced-in yard and the dogs are invited! (I work from home so the two, who are Schipperke and Schip mix are not used to long periods alone–plus ‘she’ is really old and frail). So off to Wonder Lake, Illinois we’ll be on Sunday. No Reese’s PNB eggs for me this year. We are bringing a massively decadent devil’s food and fondant half ‘egg’ cake and braided (coloured) bread (both from the best bakery in the area) to dinner as well as a veggie tray. I’m hoping to cozy up to the veggie tray before doing too much damage otherwise.

Though in skimming through the webcam shots that I snapped earlier today (Friday) one can see some snow cover, if you look closely you can see that it is quickly disappearing (compare to last week). For all intents, it is spring in the Haliburton Highlands which should make the question of what to expect when we get into ‘true’ spring really interesting, never mind pondering what will be in store for summer 2012 in the Haliburton Highlands! Regardless of what’s coming weather-wise I am truly looking forward to my time spent in the Highlands. Hope to see YOU there!

Have I mentioned that I’m a big fan of late spring, of summer and of early fall in the Haliburton Highlands? Full-on wintertime anywhere tends to be the time when I most wish to be elsewhere (Chicago area – right now- springs to mind). However, the people of the Haliburton Highlands area, who do indeed know what full-on winter feels like, never cease to impress me with the fun-for-everyone activities of all kinds that run year-round. There is nothing ‘dead’ about the ‘dead of winter in the Haliburton Highlands. Want to get just a taste of the great times in store when you spend time in the Haliburton area in February ? Read on!

When I see shots like this one, I want to immediately winterize the cottage and never leave!
Martinis and Manicures at the Wild Moose
I am so impressed with the creativity in the offerings that the folks at the Wild Moose display year-round. I enjoyed the Wild Moose with my spouse last summer and we can’t wait to go back!
When I was growing up, spending my summers on Maple Lake (nearest town: West Guilford) the village of Minden was akin to the younger sister of Haliburton. Nowadays, Haliburton is as bursting with activity as it ever has (and more!) but Minden seems to have really grown up. There are so many family-friendly events and activities going on in the Minden area, if you haven’t taken a closer look in recent years I invite you to begin doing so right now!
