Happy VICTORIA DAY WEEKEND –and beyond!

It’s official. Summer is here. The calendar even says so.

There is a whole lot going on in the Haliburton Highlands including activities in the farther away reaches of the Highlands that I’ve yet to but plan to explore.

I’m so exited that we’ll be at the cottage for part of this time period. I’m really okay with the slightly higher temperatures as it would be nice if the lake warmed up sooner than later.

Maple Lake - A new day dawns (mid -late 1990's)

Being born in late August had its benefits for my youngest son in that by the following summer Chris was old enough to enjoy Maple Lake. Here he sits with his dad in the late evening twilight, all ready for bed.

This year–2012–is his 20th year. He’s putting himself through school and won’t be spending time on Maple Lake this summer, maybe not for some summers to come. Regardless, when he’s ready to come back it will be awaiting.

From charitable events with an emphasis on support of communities in the Highlands, to a chance to meet real-time Iditarod adventurer Hank DeBruin to African Film Night and much more, there is always something happening in the Haliburton Highlands that appeals to a diverse range of interests. Speaking of ‘diverse’, that is one word to describe south eastern Ontario weather of late. I snapped some southern Ontario webcam shots today, April 24, which should give you an idea of conditions in the area right now. Pretty pictures/cold weather.

If I recall we waited a while for it not to be raining to go for a boat ride that summer but it always seemed to be…so we went anyway.

Through Chris spent quite a bit of time on Maple Lake he never really took to it the way I had. For one, he’s not all that thrilled with swimming, which the lake is perfect for.
