Cool Things that have been going on so far this week:

Book Launch: “A Raccoon in Sheep’s Clothing”

November 23 2011

Donna Bisschop is better known in Haliburton County as a fine artist then as a writer but to her, weaving tales with a pen comes as naturally as it does with a brush. Her new adult novel, ‘A Raccoon In Sheep’s Clothing,’ will be launched at R.D. Lawrence Place on Wednesday, November 23 at 7pm. A Raccoon In Sheep’s Clothing’ features the type of symbolism and metaphors that Bisschop is known for in her paintings.

The story is about Mack, a raccoon running for ruler of the world, an insurance agent named Harrison and a shaman plus various underworld beings, including the Red Fire Dragon. Things ‘heat up’ when Harrison is reduced to a mere eighteen inches in height and asked to become the raccoon’s campaign manager. The focus is on Hermes Seven Laws of Relativity, how what we are doing on Earth is unsustainable, that timing is everything and magic most definitely exists. It is a love story about how one small and insignificant being in the guise of Agent Harrison leads life from a place of integrity because sometimes that’s all there is left to work with.

This sounds like such an awesome book. I think it’s really important that we visit and revisit the realities of living on Mother Earth as well as recognizing the responsibilities that are inherent in being a resident. I also totally dig knowing that ‘magic most definitely exists’!

Literally, all my life I’ve had a beautiful summer place to go.

Thanks to my grandparents, I grew up sometimes spending months on a crystal-clear lake in the breathtakingly beautiful Haliburton Highlands in Ontario, Canada. At the time however, my nuclear family had emigrated to Connecticut–just a stone’s throw from the great state of New York and where I spent the rest of my year. My dad kept the radio on especially in the morning and I’d hear PSA’s for The Fresh Air Fund. It was hard as a child to imagine what it would be like stuck in the suburbs all summer long–never mind the inner city! Later, TV adverts made an even more indelible impression on me that I was exceptionally fortunate as there were many kids who were not.

After over 130 years of giving inner-city children the joy of a summer vacation with volunteer host families and at Fund camps, ‘creating unforgettable memories and fresh possibilities,’ no one needs to remind the not-for-profit The Fresh Air Fund of what a fantastic difference spending some of the summer away from the city can make for children.

Read an excerpt from a recent news story on how summer resources for city youth are going to be even more scarce in summer 2011:

NEW YORK — A rising number of children can look forward to excruciatingly boring school breaks this year as budget crises in places such as New York, Washington, D.C., Houston and Detroit rob them of the activities and programs that have long defined summer in the city for urban youngsters.

Swimming pools are being closed. Recreation centers are locking their doors. Library summer reading programs are suffering. Openings for short-term jobs have evaporated.

Yet, with a shift in perspective, do the kids have to be on the losing end?

‘We can’t afford to have children who don’t have positive places to be during the summer’

In New Orleans, Mayor Mitchell Landrieu this year fulfilled a campaign promise to boost city funding for children’s recreation facilities and summer programs, despite the city’s economic difficulties. While last summer, about 700 children participated in sports and literacy activities through the city’s summer camps for children ages 5 to 18, this year the city is expecting to serve 5,000 campers with the help of local organizations, private partnerships and doubled city funds, said Gina Warner, the executive director of the city’s Partnership for Youth Development.

The city – where nine out of 10 recreation sites were damaged by Hurricane Katrina – will be opening 12 pools this year, up from seven the year before and three the year before that. And libraries will be coordinating with the city summer camps to keep children reading, Warner said.

Warner said that while her city faces the same economic struggles as its counterparts around the country, elected officials see the New Orleans summer programs as not only an investment in children, but also a crime-prevention tool.

“We’re a very tourism-dependent city, and so we can’t afford to have children who don’t have positive places to be during the summer,” she said.

Though some folks enjoy green beer on St. Paddy’s Day I’ve always been partial to a good hearty, Irish meal. If you enjoy eating, too here’s a great suggestion for where to enjoy such a meal on Thursday, March 17, 2011: Between 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Minden United Church (scroll down for location info.) dig in to St. Patrick’s Day Irish Stew and Biscuit Dinner.

There are fun times in store for the whole family if you happen to be in the Haliburton Highlands in the next couple of days. What’s your pleasure? A community Tree Lighting and Carol Sing beside the Dorset Fire Hall on Sunday? Perhaps parades are more your cup o’ tea? You’ve got a choice because there are two Santa Claus parades in the Haliburton Highlands this weekend! Haliburton Village‘s commences on November 26 and Minden’s First Annual Santa Claus Parade is on November 27. Why not take in both? All the details are on this page! Because the Highlands is big on community support you may want to add the Community Care Haliburton County Christmas Bowling Party to your weekend plans. It takes place the afternoon of November 27 so be sure to check all the fine print on the flyer below and well as reading more about other fun things to do in the Haliburton Highlands this weekend.

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Lunchables. All opinions are 100% mine.

My best memories of my son’s grammar school years are when we went on field trips with the school together. Whether it was a local symphony or the Chicago Symphony, an architectural boat cruise down the Chicago River or a biology field trip to preserved prairie-land, these trips held great meaning for me personally as a shared scholastic experience with my children.

More importantly though was what the kids gained from the experiences. A field trip is a unique, beyond-the-classroom immersion into real-life situations that would otherwise not be experienced. The depth of meaning, the level of comprehension, the enjoyments of “these up close and personal” activities all serve to pull the children into the experience like no textbook can. Further, an immersive group experience can sometimes be the light that flips the switch of true comprehension about a particular idea, place or thing(s).

To my great disappointment, with my younger son, field trip activities began to appear less and less until they simply were non-existent. The reason cited was a simple one: not enough money in the school budget for anything “extra.” As a mother this really broke my heart, not only for my son but for all children who might never otherwise experience some of the wonders beyond the classroom.

I’m very happy to be able to talk today about Field Trips For All which is the first effort from the folks at Lunchables as part of their new initiative called “Project Potential.”

Project Potential is an effort to literally help kids reach their life enrichment potential that otherwise they might not ever get a chance to do.

This is enormously important because field trip elimination is affecting scores of school districts across the spectrum. Huge numbers of school districts which are grappling with tight school funds/budgets that just don’t stretch far enough for anything “extra” are cutting out fieled trips all together.

There is some hope on the horizon with the very good news that Lunchables is aware of this dilemma and is taking action to address it by encouraging, as I am doing as well right now, anyone over the age of 6 to nominate a deserving classroom by clicking over to http://www.lunchables.com/potential/ and submitting a nomination for that classroom to receive a worthwhile, outside-of-the-classroom enrichment experience.

I’m sure without too much thinking you yourself can think of a deserving classroom to be nominated to be one of 50 lucky classrooms who will be selected to go on an inspiring, educational field trip and quite possibly have an experience that will be cherished for years to come.

Why not talk this contest up? There’s only gain to be had and speaking for myself it is very easy to think of some great classrooms with fantastic teachers and kids who deserve the nomination.

The more that word of this contest gets around the more classrooms will have a chance to be one of the 50 winners–so go ahead and drop a comment here about who you nominated and a bit about why you nominated them! Who do you think this educational prize should go to? I’m picking Mrs. Parr’s class at Hunting Ridge school in Palatine, Illinois because they are the greatest bunch of kids ever and because she is the most dedicated, motivated, committed teacher I may ever have met.

March Break: Artist Trading Cards Afternoon Drop In
March 17-19 2010

You and your family can become part of a world wide trading card phenomenon! Tomorrow Wednesday, March 17 as well as Thursday & Friday from 1-3 p.m., we’ll be making and trading artist trading cards at the Rails End. Just like baseball cards in size, these individually made works of art are being collected all over the planet by young and old. Catch the creative wave as Gallery staff introduce you to techniques using pen/ink, watercolour and collage to create and embellish your cards. Fun for the whole family. Plan to spend some time at the Rails End on your March Break. All materials supplied. FREE
