Welcome to the  second weekend of June, 2011. It is amazing how quickly time is passing by as we move into the summer months. The very active weather has been a distinct reminder that we are not quite into summertime yet, rather as we transition we  are getting, as Ontario knows only too well, some very strong reminders of when warm fronts meet cold.

So what kind of weather is in store for this week? In a word I’d say ‘calm.’  Though not exactly beach weather, for most of the week temperatures should be about 20-21°C with almost no precipitation at all. A bit of a break to give everything (and one) time to dry out.

Haliburton Highlands Weekend Weather June 10 - 11

If you happen to look up into the sky right now you’ll notice variable clouds. The temperature is chilly at 52°F. The 24-hour precipitation outlook is for 0.8 inches from Friday overnight through Saturday overnight.

Saturday morning should be mainly cloudy with temperatures rising to 55°F, though by Saturday afternoon rain moves in with a high of 61°F. Saturday evening you should expect scattered showers and a high of 57°F. Overnight on Saturday look for cloudiness with clear breaks and a temperature of 50°F.

Sunday’s forecast calls for variable cloudiness with a high temperature of 61°F, and a low of 50°F overnight. There is no rain in the forecast.

Monday will be sunny with a high of 64°F and an overnight low of 48°F. There is again, no rain in the forecast.

Tuesday will be sunny with a very pleasant high of 72°F. Nighttime temperatures fall to 50°F and there is no rain in the forecast.

Wednesday, expect cloudy periods, a high temperature of 73°F and a low overnight of 54°F. You should not expect rain.

The forecast for Thursday is for sunny skies, a high temperature of 66°F and a warm-ish temperature overnight of 59°F.

The week closes out on Friday with isolated showers, a high of 68°F and a low overnight of 57°F. There may be up to 0.1 inches of precipitation accumulation on Friday.

The bugs in cottage country right now are as we say, ‘thick.” What that means specifically is that the Black Flies will eat you up and the the Deer Flies will finish what’s left–UNLESS you wear long sleeved shirts, full-length pants and douse yourself in DEET. To state the obvious, the heavy rains have not helped the bug situation.

So all-in-all a good week for hiking, camping, biking, boating–whatever your pleasure. Just dress accordingly and you’ll have a grand time.

Since I never quite got to bed last night (long story) I was able to grab some awesome morning shots of southeastern Ontario at 9 a.m. Eastern (8 a.m. Central). And, since I’m just getting the weather-cast done now, I’ve grabbed a couple more shots of sunsets in beautiful southeastern Ontario, Canada. Something for everyone.

I hear that Ontarians have had record rainfall in the month of May. I sympathize as though you might not expect it, weather here in the Chicago area is not too different. We’ve had the record rainy May, the zig-zagging temperatures, mostly on the cold side–but then excruciatingly hot and humid for a day or so as well. Just nutty.

So, what do we dare expect for this week? You may be pleasantly surprised!

First, in a big change, there will be almost no rainfall in southeastern Ontario for the next week. That is very welcome coming on the heels of such a wet May. Temperatures in general will be rather moderate with daytime highs about 21 or 22 °C during the day. Here are the details:

Expect variable cloudiness overnight on Friday with temperatures dipping down to 50°F. You could get up to 0.1 inches of rain from Friday evening through Saturday evening.

You’ll wake on Saturday to isolated showers and a temperature of 57°F. Isolated showers continue through Saturday afternoon with a high of 70°F. Saturday evening will be cloudy with showers and a temperature of 66°F. Saturday’s overnight low will be 50°F.

Tuesday, June 7, expect cloudy periods, a high of 68°F and an overnight low of  54°F. There is no precipitation forecast for Tuesday.

Wednesday, June 8, isolated showers are again in the forecast. The high is expected to be 72°F and the overnight low, 50°F. You may get close to 0.1 inch of precipitation accumulation.

Thursday, June 9, will be a mainly sunny day with a high expected to be 72°F and the overnight low, 57°F. There is no precipitation forecast for Thursday.

Judging from the photos it itsrainy in many area of southern Ontario Saturday, early afternoon. By Saturday evening however it should become mainly cloudy. There is expected to be 0.1 inch of rain from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. The high temperature Saturday will be 64°F and the overnight low, 55°F.

Sunday, look for a cloudy day with showers. The high temperature is expected to be 66°F and the overnight low 55°F.  There may be up to 0.1 inch of rain accumulation.

Monday, expect variable clouds, a pleasant high of 75°F and a repeat of Monday’s overnight low of 55°F.  Again, there may be up to 0.1 inch of rain accumulation.

Tuesday, there’ll be a chance of  thundershowers with the high temperature soaring to 81°F, though it should feel like 95°F(!) The overnight low will be 63°F and there is again a chance of up to 0.1 inch of rain accumulation.

Wednesday will be sunny. The high will be a comfortable 73°F and the low overnight, 57°F. There is no rain in the forecast.

Thursday, June 2, expect variable cloudiness and a high of 63°F. The overnight low will drop to 50°F. There is no precipitation in the forecast.

Friday will be a sunny day with a mild temperature of 64°F.  The low overnight will be a chilly 48°F and there is no rain in the forecast.

Welcome to the May 24 weekend, the first EDIT/statutory Canadian ‘summer’ holiday except in the eastern maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island or in Newfoundland & Labrador.

Hopefully, if you are headed to cottage country in southeastern Ontario, you left early on Friday (missed all the bad traffic) and are now there anticipating a lovely Saturday.

Look for some isolated showers Friday evening with cloudy periods overnight Friday. The low temperature will be a pleasant 54°F.

Saturday morning looks great with the forecast calling for ‘sunny’ weather and 57°F to begin the day. By Saturday afternoon “variable cloudiness” becomes part of the picture with Saturday evening becoming cloudy with sunny breaks. The high temperature for Saturday will reach 75°F and the overnight low, 54°F.  There is forecast 0.1 inches of rain in this 24-hour period.

Haliburton Highlands Long Term Weather May 21 -through May 27

Sunday, May 22, calls for showers and the accompanying clouds. The high should be a comfortable 68°F, the low overnight also a comfortable 55°F; expect 0.1 inches of rain in this 24-hour period.

Monday the 23rd of May, formerly known as ‘Victoria Day,’ there will be a chance of thundershowers. The high will be 68°F and the overnight low 57°F with a chance of up to 0.7 inches of precipitation accumulation.

Tuesday, May 24 brings variable clouds, a high temperature of of 64°F and a low overnight of 52°F. There could be up to 0.3 inches of precipitation accumulation.

Wednesday, May 25 expect light rain, a high of 63°F and a low overnight of 48°F. Like the previous day, there could be up to 0.3 inches of precipitation accumulation.

Thursday May 26, scattered showers are predicted with the high reaching 61°F and an overnight low of 50°F. There may be 0.4 inches-plus of precipitation accumulation.

If you are like many folks in Ontario who get away from home to cottage country on the weekends (and beyond), you may not be waiting for May 24 to begin hauling up your boats to the many lakes and rivers in southeastern Ontario.

The summer season in Ontario though quite beautiful (amazing, breathtaking–take your pick of adjectives) is also quite short. So then, water enthusiasts whether they use watercraft or partake in the myriad other ways of soaking up the ambiance of cottage country, are quite ready to make the short journey there even if the weekend forecast looks like this weekend’s:

Haliburton Highlands weekend weather May 13-14

Not that we should ‘expect’ balmy, rain-free days so early in the season but one can’t help but hope that at least one day of the weather shall be nice for recreational activities outdoors. Probably not happening this week as the rest of the week for the most part, is not looking super-duper, either.

I can see from the webcam shots that I just took that it is probably no exaggeration that in the next 24 hours you can expect upwards of an inch of rainfall. Fortunately, the temperature will remain mild overnight  Friday at a low of 57°F.

You’ll wake up on Saturday to light rain with the temperature remaining steady at 57°F, before dropping to 54°F Saturday evening with more light rain and a low of 50°F.

Sunday, as promised, will be cloudy with showers and a high of just 54°F.  The low overnight will be 43°F and the rain accumulation will be 0.1 inch.

Monday, expect light rain and a chilly high of 48°F. The nighttime low will be 39° and the rain accumulation will again be 0.1 inch.

Tuesday, expect isolated showers, a high of 57 °F and an overnight low–again– of 39°. The rain accumulation will again be 0.1 inch.

Wednesday expect (what else?) light rain with high temperatures reaching 61° and overnight lows about 45°F.  There may be a half-inch or more rain accumulation.

Thursday, May 19, brings more scattered showers, a high of 61°F and an overnight low of 46°F.  The rain accumulation will again be 0.1 inch.

Mouth of Buttermilk Falls to Boshkung Lake

Before I get to the weather thought I’d mention a fun excursion we took to a place that as far as I recollect I’d not ever visited. Buttermilk Falls is just a hop, skip and jump from us on Maple Lake–only Beech Lake separates yet connects us.

Beautiful Buttermilk Falls is a place to easily navigate both traditional and granite trails where the scenery seems to grow more breath-taking with each step along side it. There are several park benches along the way too so one can comfortably linger, admiring the  beauty of another of the many gems of the Haliburton Highlands. Very glad we went. Will remember it as a peaceful place to visit especially when peace eludes me here at the cottage. It’s completely free as well. Now, the weather.

It’s just past 8:30 p.m. and it is chilly. By overnight temperatures will plunge to 46 degrees F.

Waking up tomorrow will also be chilly at 54F degrees. By Saturday afternoon you can look forward to mainly sunny conditions and a high of 70F. Saturday evening will be mainly clear and about 60 degrees F.

The overnight low on Saturday will be 55F with variable clouds.

August 1st is a civic holiday in Canada and based on  the crowds at the Haliburton Midnight Madness celebration in downtown Haliburton (photos to come) folks in cottage country are enjoying the extra day off.

So let’s get on with it, shall we?

Saturday morning will be sunny and 57 degrees F. Saturday will continue mainly sunny and 73 degrees F.  Saturday evening brings cloudy periods and a temperature of 68 degrees F. Overnight on Saturday there will be variable cloudiness and a low of54 degrees F.

On Sunday look for variable cloudiness and a high of 73 degrees F. The overnight low will be 54 degrees F.  No rain is expected.

Wednesday the sun returns though with some variable clouds as well. High temperatures should be about 79 degrees F. The low overnight will be 64 degrees F.

Thursday, August 5 will be a sunny day with a high temperature of 77 degrees F –which will feel like 88 degrees. The overnight low on Thursday will be 64 degrees F.

Friday brings yet more sun with a high of 75 degrees F and an overnight low of 63 degrees F. No rain is in the forecast from Wednesday through Friday.

Kincardine Channel Sunset, Penetangore River to Lake Huron

Hi again,

This will be the last time for some weeks that I put together the forecast from a 700 mile distance from Maple Lake. Next week I’ll be quite happy to forecast from the Haliburton Highlands.

Monday I’ll set out for a few weeks of cottage time. I don’t think I need to tell anyone that the hot and humid suburban summertime conditions are no picnic and the Lake will be a welcome change. So what will the weather be like?

Short Term Forecast Maple Lake and Haliburton Highlands

Overnight on Saturday expect some isolated showers and a low temperature of 63°F.

Waking up on Sunday look for isolated showers to continue and a temperature of 64°F. As the day goes on however you’ll see cloudy periods and can expect a high temperature of 75°F.  There could be 0.1 inch of rain accumulation in this 24-hour period. Sunday afternoon expect cloudy periods and a high of 75°F. Sunday evening, sunny skies and 72°F.

Overnight Sunday expect the temperatures to drop to 55°F and it will be clear.

Haliburton Highlands long term Weather

Monday, expect sunny skies and a high  of 77°F. The low overnight is forecast to again be 55°F.

Tuesday will be mainly sunny and 79°F with the third-in-a-row cool nighttime low of 55°F. Perfect sleeping weather.

There is no precipitation in the forecast for Monday or Tuesday.

Wednesday, expect variable cloudiness a high of 79°F–which will feel like 91°F– and an overnight low of 63°F.

There could be up to a quarter-inch of precipitation accumulation.

Thursday expect isolated showers and a high of 73°F. The low temperature overnight on Thursday is expected to be 61°F and there may be up to one-tenth of one inch rainfall.

Friday, July 30, expect cloudy periods and a high of 73°F. The overnight low  will be 61°F. There is no rain in the forecast.

Saturday, July 31st is expected to be mainly sunny day with a high of 73°F, and overnight low of 59°F and again,

no precipitation in the forecast.

Summer has certainly reached the Haliburton Highlands and on the whole, the weather for the next 2 weeks should be NORMAL. Isn’t that fantastic?!

I had high hopes after the less-than-great summers of 2008-09 and Mother Nature seems to have come through for us.

The remainder of this weekend calls for light rain and a high temperature of 68°F. Light rain continues overnight Sunday with low temperatures a mild 63°F. There could be 0.6 inches of rain in this 24-hour period.

Monday morning is more of the same with a prediction of cloudy with showers and the day starting at about 64°F.  By Monday afternoon  the weather shifts to cloudy with sunny breaks and a high temperature of 75°F.

Monday evening calls for variable cloudiness and a high of 75°F. Overnight Monday, expect cloudy periods which change to mostly clear as the temperature drops to 57°F.
