Hi again,

This will be the last time for some weeks that I put together the forecast from a 700 mile distance from Maple Lake. Next week I’ll be quite happy to forecast from the Haliburton Highlands.

Monday I’ll set out for a few weeks of cottage time. I don’t think I need to tell anyone that the hot and humid suburban summertime conditions are no picnic and the Lake will be a welcome change. So what will the weather be like?

Short Term Forecast Maple Lake and Haliburton Highlands

Overnight on Saturday expect some isolated showers and a low temperature of 63°F.

Waking up on Sunday look for isolated showers to continue and a temperature of 64°F. As the day goes on however you’ll see cloudy periods and can expect a high temperature of 75°F.  There could be 0.1 inch of rain accumulation in this 24-hour period. Sunday afternoon expect cloudy periods and a high of 75°F. Sunday evening, sunny skies and 72°F.

Overnight Sunday expect the temperatures to drop to 55°F and it will be clear.

Haliburton Highlands long term Weather

Monday, expect sunny skies and a high  of 77°F. The low overnight is forecast to again be 55°F.

Tuesday will be mainly sunny and 79°F with the third-in-a-row cool nighttime low of 55°F. Perfect sleeping weather.

There is no precipitation in the forecast for Monday or Tuesday.

Wednesday, expect variable cloudiness a high of 79°F–which will feel like 91°F– and an overnight low of 63°F.

There could be up to a quarter-inch of precipitation accumulation.

Thursday expect isolated showers and a high of 73°F. The low temperature overnight on Thursday is expected to be 61°F and there may be up to one-tenth of one inch rainfall.

Friday, July 30, expect cloudy periods and a high of 73°F. The overnight low  will be 61°F. There is no rain in the forecast.

Saturday, July 31st is expected to be mainly sunny day with a high of 73°F, and overnight low of 59°F and again,

no precipitation in the forecast.

Haliburton Highlands Short Term Weather

Summer has certainly reached the Haliburton Highlands and on the whole, the weather for the next 2 weeks should be NORMAL. Isn’t that fantastic?!

I had high hopes after the less-than-great summers of 2008-09 and Mother Nature seems to have come through for us.

The remainder of this weekend calls for light rain and a high temperature of 68°F. Light rain continues overnight Sunday with low temperatures a mild 63°F. There could be 0.6 inches of rain in this 24-hour period.

Monday morning is more of the same with a prediction of cloudy with showers and the day starting at about 64°F.  By Monday afternoon  the weather shifts to cloudy with sunny breaks and a high temperature of 75°F.

Monday evening calls for variable cloudiness and a high of 75°F. Overnight Monday, expect cloudy periods which change to mostly clear as the temperature drops to 57°F.

Haliburton Highlands Long Term Weather July 20 -25

Tuesday, you can expect variable clouds with a high of 75°F and an overnight low of 57°F. There is no rain in the forecast.

Wednesday also calls for variable cloudiness. The high will be 77°F–which will feel like 88°F– and the overnight low should be about 63°F. There is no rain in the forecast.

Thursday will be a sunny day with a high temperature of 79°F–which will feel like 91°F with an overnight low of 64°F. Again, there is no rain in the forecast.

Friday, July 23 bring clouds and showers, a high of 79°F, which will feel like 93°F and a muggy overnight low of 66°F. More than 10mm of rain is possible so it looks like some significant storms are rolling in.

Saturday, there will be a chance of thunderstorms, a high of 75°F and another muggy overnight low of 68°F. There may be 0.4 inches of the wet stuff.

Finally, on Sunday expect a sunny day, a pleasant high of 75°F and an overnight low  of 66°F. There is no rain in the forecast.

Welcome t o your weekend! Have a peek at the lovely shot of Green Lake near West Guilford, which was snapped on July 3, 2010. The skies in the Haliburton Highlands are some of the most beautiful I’ve *seen in eastern north America and this shot exemplifies that gorgeously. (*Seen in person, not in webshots (lol).)

Saturday:

For the remainder of today–Saturday expect the sun to be prominent but the temperatures to be moderate at about 75°F. You’ll have a clear overnight with a low temperature of 57°F. Sunday morning you’ll arise to another sunny day at 68°F. As your Sunday progresses the temperature will climb to 82°F. The overnight low will be about 66°F and will remain clear.

There is no rain in the forecast for this 24-hour period.

Monday brings scattered showers in the afternoon with a high of 79°F  and an overnight low of 64°F. The total precipitation should be about one-half inch.

July 12- 16, 2010 Weather Haliburton Highlands

Tuesday will be cloudy with showers. The high temperature will be about 75°F and the low overnight 64°F. Total precipitation should be about one-third of an inch.

Expect scattered showers in the afternoon on Wednesday July 14, with a high of 81°F and an overnight low of 64°F. There should be 0.1 inch precipitation accumulation.

Thursday will be mainly sunny with a high temp of 82 °F and an overnight low of 66°F. Like the day before, there should be 0.1 inch precipitation accumulation.

Friday will bring isolated showers and a high of 82°f. It will feel like 97°F though (with the day before almost at hot-feeling at a 95-degree humidex) so remember to rehydrate. The overnight low temp for Friday will be 66°F. There will be a trace of precipitation in total.

Saturday will be sunny with a beautiful high of 82°F and an overnight low of 66°F.there is no precipitation forecast for Saturday, July 17.

Hey there!

For the heck of it and because I miss it so, I’m going to post some “best of” shots of Maple Lake. Most of them are by me but since I’m more of a “on-the-go”- type photographer and my spouse is quite precise the macros probably belong to him. Enjoy!

Now for the weather.

As everyone in cottage country knows we need the rain. However most of us would be sort of pleased it a little more came during the work-week and a little less on the weekend.

Short Term Forecast June 4 -5 , 2010

As you may have observed tonight’s forecast includes clouds and showers with a low of 14°C. Close to 1mm of precipitation is expected from Friday overnight through Saturday evening.

Waking up on Saturday you’ll see more of the same, cloudy with showers and 14°C. Rain tapers off Saturday afternoon and  the skies switch to variable clouds. The temperature should reach 22°C. Not much change through Saturday evening, variable clouds continue with the temps dipping slightly to 19°C.

Showers move in overnight Saturday. You’ll have a mix of cloudiness, clouds with showers and rain with temperatures dipping and temperatures fall to 13°C.

Long Term Weather Forecast June 6 -June 11

On Sunday expect light rain with a high temperature of 19°C and a low of 11°C. Rain accumulation is expected to be about 5mm.

There will be cloudy periods on Monday with temperatures struggling up to 20°C and a chilly low overnight of 10°C. No precip is in the forecast.

Tuesday looks like  the best “outside” day of the week. Expect a sunny day with temperatures at a comfortable 22°C. There’ll be a rather dramatic drop in temperatures overnight–down to 8°C. No rain is expected.

Wednesday, variable clouds move in with a high temperature of 23°C. Another cold night is in store with 9°C as the low. Two to 4mm of precip is called for.

You’ll have isolated showers on Thursday with temperatures edging up to 25°C for a high and 13°C for the overnight low. You’ll have less than 1mm of rain accumulation.

Expect light rain on Friday with a high temperature of  24 °C and a low of 15 C° overnight.  This will be the rainiest 24-hr. period this week with 10mm-plus precipitation accumulation.

Weekend Weather May 29 - 30. 2010

Welcome to your weekend! Apologies *again* for being tardy. We really need to get past this May /June insanity phase with its graduations, birthdays, greeting card holidays, a national holiday… ’nuff said.

Your weekend in the Haliburton Highlands looks perfectly gorgeous with this evening — Saturday being sunny with a temperature of 70°F. Overnight will be comfortable with a low of 54°F.

Sunday morning, you’ll be greeted with sun and a temperature of 64°F with temperatures steadily climbing until by afternoon it should be 79°F. Simply a beautiful day on Sunday with a high of 79°F. It will stay clear throughout Sunday evening with some cloudy periods overnight and a comfortable low temp of 59°F.

There is no precipitation expected from Saturday evening through Monday morning.

Weather May 31 -June 5

There is a chance of thundershowers on Monday, May 31. The high temperature will be 26°C but it will feel like 30°C (!) Overnight, expect temperatures to drop to a seasonal 15°C. There could be 2-4mm of rain accumulation.

Tuesday, you should look for isolated showers, a high temperature of 24°C and a low overnight once again of 15°C. There should be less than 1mm of rain accumulated.

Wednesday, the Haliburton area will have have cloudy periods and a cooler high of 22°C. Overnight gets a bit nippy with a low of 11°C. No rain, though.

Thursday, June 3 expect variable cloudiness and a high of 21°C. The overnight low dips way down to 9°C. Expect 2-4mm of precipitation.

Friday will be a day of isolated showers especially in the afternoon, with a high of 22°C. Overnight temperatures drop to 13°C and there may be up to 1-3mm rain accumulation.

Light rain is expected on Saturday, June 5. The high during the daylight hours is expected to be 22°C.  The overnight low should be about 13°C.

Close to 10mm rain accumulation is expected.

Welcome to the Victoria Day weekend!
First off a big thanks to Mother Nature for the rain not really affecting the long weekend in cottage country!

Update/ The Bug Report is being published now so I’ve added it in with the photographs (below).

Still, the wet weather isn’t affecting cottagers. By the noon hour on Friday, traffic was almost at a dead stop on the 400. Sergeant Dave Woodford is with the Ontario Provincial Police and he said he saw traffic building even earlier than that. “Early this morning we’ve just seen trailer after trailer. A lot of boat trailers and drivers hauling the ATV’s behind their vehicles.”

Woodford warns that for those planning on getting in their boat, the water is still cold despite the recent hot weather. “Make sure that you have extra clothing on if you’re in your boat. Take extra caution out there because if anything happens and you go overboard or something like that, you don’t want to have hypothermia.”

Short Term Weather Haliburton Highlands

Tonight– Friday look for cloudy skies with clear breaks. The low temperature will be an unseasonably warm  63°F.

Waking up Saturday morning expect it to be cloudy with sunny breaks with a temperature of 66°F. By Saturday afternoon temperatures climb to 77°F and there may be an isolated shower or two. Saturday evening brings variable cloudiness and a low of 73°F.

Only a trace of precipitation is expected in this 24-hour period.

Victoria Day & Long Term Weather Forecast

Sunday May 23, looks lovely with some cloudy periods and a comfortable temperature of 23°C.* Sunday night’s low will be 12°C.

On Monday, the 24th of May look for a mainly sunny day and more great temperatures for cottagers with a high of 26°C.  The low overnight is to be 13° C. The lakes should warm up quickly this year if this trend continues (which I hope it does!)

Tuesday will be a bright and sunny day, a precursor to some really warm weather coming up on Wednesday. The high temperature on Tuesday will be 27°F (!) and the low overnight 13°F.

Wednesday will be a sunny day and the temperature will be  28°C.  The overnight low will be 15°C. Love those cool cottage nights after a hot day!

Thursday will be mainly sunny with a high of 26°C and a low of 15°C overnight.

On Friday the mild trend continues with a high temperature of 24°C and an overnight low of 14°C.

There is no rain in the Sunday- Friday forecast!

Bug Report - Haliburton Highlands Victoria Day Week

The weekend weather forecast for the Haliburton Highlands is the best so far this summer!

It’s truly gorgeous–sunny, clear, humidity is tolerable. And it’s going to be nice on Sunday, too! Can you believe it? I need to pinch myself ‘cos it’s been so long since Maple Lake has had an entire weekend that was this nice.

My weekender neighbours are quite fortunate since they just need to pack an overnight bag and in a snap they can be in paradise. Not quite as fortunate are folks like my immediate family who left today to return to the States.

Turning quite serious, folks, we are all on the same page on global warming now, right? We acknowledge it; it is happening right now. We have used and abused our poor planet and it does not have to be reflected as “warming” in certain spots. Here in the Haliburton Highlands, it’s been really cold and wet until this week. Pay attention to the excessive precipitation, especially.

Maple Lake, to be frank, has given me an eye infection simply by using lake water to wash my face. I know this because I wear goggles in the lake as I am unable to see without my contact lenses. The waters of Maple Lake have spewed up all kinds of garbage this summer–literally all kinds of plastic, coke cans. I’ve not ever seen it like this and it makes me really sad.

I’m sure I’m not the first but I feel that the year-rounders, the permanent residents should move forward to protect the lakes of Haliburton County. Obviously, we cannot change how Mother Nature is behaving right now but we can change human behaviour. Impose restrictions to protect our lakes and all nature that depend on the ecosystem, as people haven’t shown willingness to “reign it in” on their own.

First, I would like to see the obvious pollutants removed from the Lake. I would like to see a ban on motorboats that leak gasoline into the lakes and nearly drown swimmers like me with their huge waves (not kidding– HUGE waves).

Truly, I hate the noise too, but it’s the pollution that is sickening me. The boats are getting more powerful, ridiculously fast, and burning petrol at a time when I thought we were supposed to be practicing conservation. Our lakes are what make this area the paradise that it is. And we are doing our damnedest to destroy paradise.

Please, Haliburton Highland year-rounders, restrict the use of motorboats to the weekend and otherwise allow all the the other nonpolluting boats free and unfettered any time. The beautiful sailboats, the rowboats, canoes, paddleboats—all of them wind/man-powered and not harmful to our dying lakes.

If we don’t start reigning in our excesses and our abuse of the lakes of Cottage Country there is no doubt in my mind that we shall lose them. Nothing would be sadder if our unquenchable need for “things” and need to have the biggest, fastest motorboats and personal motorized vehicles hastened the death of our lakes–leaving nothing left for anyone.

I can only hope that the fine people that live year-round on Maple Lake and in the Maple Lake area take action this winter and next summer to deal with the craziness that breaks out every weekend here with ridiculous amount of polluting watercraft on what was what was once a clean lake. It’s not just here but throughout Cottage Country.

Also, as related to a lesser pollution, what the heck is with the unrestricted use of fireworks on Maple Lake every single weekend? Hey, I LOVE fireworks. They can be really special–but every weekend?! WTH? My poor dog is terrified. She shakes and glues herself to her people.

Ban fireworks on Maple Lake except for Canada Day, period. Stop the insanity, please.

It was a gorgeous day here at Maple Lake and beyond as we ventured into the Sculpture Forest in nearby Haliburton.

It was such a welcome respite from the soggy days and chilly nights as well as the inverse, it might put one into an optimistic frame of mind that more good weather is in store for the weekend. That would be a wrong assumption, I regret to inform you.

Tonight (Friday) will be COLD. Forty-two degrees for a nighttime low tonight, August 7. Tomorrow will start off chilly  but dry…until the rain comes into play starting in the afternoon. At below 70F, the temperatures are not going to be very impressive, either.

Sunday, August 9th is set to improve as  far as the temperatures warming to upper seventies. Expect thunderstorms for the entire day, however. Sorry. Nighttime lows will be about 62 F.

The upside is if you don’thave to head home on Monday you’ll enjoy a sunny day near 80 F with nighttime lows in the mid 60′s F.

Long-term weather forecast

Tuesday looks “iffy” with a chance of thundershowers and a high of 71 F. Evening lows on Tuesday should be about 60 F. Wednesday, things again look lovely. Expect sunny skies and highs in the mid-70′s F.

Thursday is predicted to be much like Wednesday with tempertures nearing 80F and overnight lows for both Wednesday and Thursday about 55F.

On Friday expect mainly sunny skies with a high of 78F and an evening low of 55F.

In terms of bugs, I’d describe them as moderate overall.  I don’t think the chilly weather agrees with them. The bug report follows.

Bug Report

The sun came out long enough today to make the Lake enticing enough to swim in. It was really nice. The bugs here however are very thick and two horse flies set their sights on my son and me so we had to act as each other’s “watcher.”  You know when a horse fly is nearby because they sound like small aircraft but they tend to dodge pretty well. I now have a huge lump just behind my left ear so something bit me–but I don’t think it was one of those guys.

The weather is as good as it’s going to get for our stay. The temps are never going to approach “normal” and more often than not there will be a chance of rain. I’ve found however that much like  the spring rains in Southern California, just because it rains on any given day  up here in the Haliburton Highlands, does not mean that half of that day won’t be just fine. Yes thanks, I would rather see the glass as half-full.

This is the long holiday weekend and I’m going to go over the weekend weather including Monday, and then let you read on for  the full week’s forecast, plus the 14-day outlook as I too am on vacation.

Tonight–Friday night is fairly mild with a low of 53F. Sitting here now in the unheated living  room is quite comfortable as the sun stayed out for over half the day, warming up the cottage.

Tomorrow–Saturday will have a high of 78F, sun most of the day with isolated showers in the afternoon. Evening should be clear and about 71F.

Sunday– Might be a good day to catch a matinee at the newly reopened Beaver Theatre in Minden. The forecast calls for a soggy day with a high of 71F.

Civic Holiday Monday — will have a high of 68F and isolated showers. Make it a good one!

14-day forecast

Indian River, Port Carling, Ontario - July 25, 2009

Sorry, gang, I’m very late to the forecast though the midweek long-term one,  if you happened to get a chance to read it, pretty well summed up what you already know if you live in the Haliburton County/Maple Lake area.

The summer thus far has been wetter than normal and cooler than normal to state it plainly. Upcoming weather in August is to improve significantly everywhere but eastern Ontario. I’m afraid we cannot catch a break.
However the temperatures should get closer to normal in August as well as a slight easing of the rainfall but this is a cautiously optimistic view. For the remainder of this weekend:

July 25-26, 2009

You’ve got thunderstorms or showers the entire weekend of July 25-26. Temperatures are below normal ranging from 60°F Saturday night to a high of 68°F Sunday afternoon.

Both Monday and Tuesday’s forecasts predict “showers” with Monday’s showers accompanied by thunder. Highs will be 71°F and 75°F respectively. Both nights call for comfortable temperatures with highs of about 60°F.
Wednesday is expected to have a low of 59°F overnight.
Thursday, expect a mainly sunny day with a high of 73°F. Wednesday and Thursday will have nighttime lows of about 59°F and 55°F respectively. Friday as has been many Fridays this summer, will be nice. Look for a mainly sunny day with a temperatures expected to be about 75°F and nighttime lows a cool 50°F.  August comes in on a high note with the forecast for August 1st calling for a sunny day with a high of 78°F and a nighttime low of 57°F.
