Both yesterday and today were near-perfect days for a low-key ride around the lake. We’ve added an electric trolling motor to the little red rowboat to make sight-seeing and pic-snapping a bit more fun.

I hadn’t taken out the boat before because with the huge storms of a couple of weeks ago the boat was swamped and the battery completely submerged. It may be girly of me, but I didn’t want to fool with it –better to let spouse figure out if all was well and he was back in the States for three weeks. Thankfully, everything turned out OK.

Yesterday, we hit the Gull River area of Maple Lake which is the only boat access area on the lake (though we didn’t go that far down river). Today we  went about 2/3’s across the widest point of the lake (about 2 miles) but stopped short of making the entire trip because we weren’t 100% sure of how much battery life ‘25%’ meant.

We pulled the swim dock out after our rides and swam until dinnertime. Today though, I need to attempt to be ready ( I’m not sure I’m ever going to be truly so until I get there) to set off for Toronto tomorrow for a day or so to meet friends. But, I’m quite sure we’ll be getting a lot of use of the old boat with the neat little new motor from now on.

Spending All of July on Maple Lake For the First Time Since I Was a Kid

Maple Lake Ontario--July 24 2013

Maple Lake Ontario–July 24 2013

Woke to a chilly morning which contrasted sharply with about a week’s worth of mornings earlier this month. By late afternoon however, the insistence of  a predominately sunny day warmed us within and without. The presence too of extended family, my own and that of my cousin’s, made the day yet another that reminds me of why I love it here so much. The setting is conducive to comradery and easy conversation.

Roger, my cousin-in-law and his sibling rebuilt the landing to the 2nd beach here. It had been torn apart by the unusually harsh winter conditions. I have no talent whatsoever for such things, so had a lovely conversation with my cousin’s in-laws, who were lakeside observing, as the trio got the job done in just about an hour. It’s neat when people just come together and make something cool that everyone enjoys doing so ‘just because’.

Accu-weather says it’ll be another cool morning  today but a lovely day overall. I plan to make use of the swim raft and crack open  Martin’s A Feast For Kings, which I finally broke down and bought after not finishing it twice after taking out from the library back home. It’s always on a wait list and I just want to get the darned thing finished.

Ooh, almost forgot. We’ve been sampling local baker’s buttertarts for me to bring to a gathering in Toronto this weekend. I think we’ve settled on The Country Bakery in Carnarvon. The pecan buttertarts are excellent and the blueberry scones delish as well.

Today is Hot and Humid. Really hot and humid. Don’t wear anything more than a swimsuit and stay in the water or in the shade or in front of a fan because this kind of heat is icky-sticky hot. Some relief is on it’s way though–tomorrow afternoon with violent thunderstorms moving in. This time, I will not be foolish enough to leave my little red boat unprotected. Will gather my eclectic collection of tarps and tie that thing down like nobody’s business. Ha.

After over three weeks here I’m am getting up to speed on all kinds of stuff. Like as a kid, I knew there were BEER Stores but I never went inside one. I did so the other day–an actual stand-alone BEER Store but was immediately flummoxed as to how to purchase the beer.  Two lines, one with people that looked like they already had beer, and another with folks that had nothing but were paying for something. The lines were about 10 deep but moving fast and I didn’t want to look like a “furner’ nor did I want to hold up the line. Lucky for me, the lady in front of me, a well-tanned retirement-aged gal was super-happy to point out all the permutations of how to buy BEER in Minden, Ontario (which if I may say so, you should chose over Haliburton this year in order to help out local businesses in Minden who have been working non-stop to help their town recover from the spring flooding). The BEER Store also took it on the chin, a few months ago:

OK, so I stepped up to the counter, placed my order (it works like a take out stand) and within moments a 15-pack of Molson’s Canadian rolled out from the back room. Bonus: it was on sale for $15!

So today is not slated to be such an adventure. I need to go to the municipal building and get a new dump pass but here are some cool shots I took yesterday on Maple Lake. The duck (I think it’s a duck) was all alone–not with the brown-mottled ducks nor anywhere near the shit-hawks seagulls. I tried looking it up last night but no other Ontario water bird looked like it. Drop me a comment if you recognize what kind of bird the red-headed, white collared, pointy-beaked, grey-bodied bird is.  Thanks!

After some wild weather on Maple Lake–a welcome change  this weekend

Toronto had a great deal more destructive weather, with a month’s worth of rain failing in a 24-hour period this week, but Maple Lake did not escape unscathed.

Over a couple of days, we had high winds scattering debris, taking down tree branches and leaves and in our case, swamping our little red rowboat with it’s tiny new motor. The weather moved so fast that I checked the boat at 12 noon before I took a nap (dang insomnia struck again) and 2 hours later when I went back down the stone steps to Maple Lake–the boat had broken free of it’s anchor and was almost swamped with water, waves crashing upon it again and again. I was here alone and I tried to ‘rescue’ it but the waves were much speedier than I and all the bailing I did was for naught as for every bucket out, 2 more came in. It was simply impossible in those weather circumstances to gain headway so I waited for the lake to settle down–which it did not do until today. The battery to the little electric motor was fully submerged and there were minnows swimming inside the boat when I set to bailing. I was surprised that sans the big wave action, it took almost no time at all to rid the boat of the water and debris. I secured the boat to to an ancient tree on the  bank and sat the battery up where it is dry. Maybe tomorrow we’ll see if it is going to ‘come back to life’ or if it is dead.

Meanwhile, I had a very nice visit with a neighbour today. It was lovely out and our dogs were racing about with abandon. Good news! there’s more great weather coming!

The weekend here in the Highlands is going to be about as nice as it can possibly get.  Here’s a thumbnail picture, courtesy of AccuWeather.com.

Had a massive case of insomnia last night so after much tossing and turning, I looked out my window which has a Maple Lake view, and it was pretty as a picture. If I took time to get dressed the moment would escape from me so I pulled on my denim full-length jacket, grabbed the camera and in my dozy state, snapped off a few shots.
