Vicious winds and rain hit southern Ontario

Hurricane Sandy – Impact on southern Ontario:

“Sandy”

On Saturday, flood warnings were issued across southern Ontario, including the Toronto area, ahead of  hurricane ‘Sandy’.

The Toronto Region Conservation Authority is warning that the storm could bring heavy rainfall over a period of several days, leading to rising water levels, combined with strong wind gusts.

This is likely one of the first of many weather statements that will be issued across the country in the days to come, courtesy of what some meteorologists are calling a ‘mammoth’ storm.

Parts of Ontario may see the worst of Sandy when it hits early next week, with 50 and 100 millimetres of rain expected late Monday and early Tuesday — although Canada won’t be as hard-hit as the U.S.

“We could see thousands of trees down and millions without power in Ontario and Quebec by early next week,” says Chris Scott, Directory of Meteorology at The Weather Network.

If you recall, during Halloween week 2011, we had a BIG storm that included the first snowfall of the season for many areas of the eastern seaboard. Fortunately, the coastal storms often are a bit tamer once they veer into southern Ontario but even so, it’s worth taking note of “hurricane Sandy’s’ progress and to prepare accordingly. I know that folks in the Highlands are a hearty bunch and have managed quite well in a variety of weather so I’m not worried but I will check in if anything alarming pops up in the next few days. My spouse watches the weather at our summer place on Maple Lake very closely so I have back-up if I need it in the checking- in department. 🙂

The 14-Day Weather Outlook looks a bit odd but it is the change of season so ‘odd’ is rather normal, no? The constant remains that the low temperatures are above normal almost every day. Rain makes an appearance for about 8 of the 14 days and the high temperatures will be below normal most of the time, though thankfully only significantly down from normal for a few days over the two week span between October 28 and November 10.

Highlands Weather to be Soggy and Seasonably Mild (for awhile, anyway):

You may recall seeing a shot of one of my sons, tubing on Maple Lake. It was the only summer that the motorboat that was purchased quite used by my parents functioned while we ere visiting. In the photo set I have today, the boat is dead/ dying. It’s almost sunset and we are waiting to see if we can go for a spin but a boat ride is not looking hopeful. Even so, the Maple Lake-with-family 1990’s-era photos are pretty.

In re: the 14- day Extended Weather Outlook (West Guilford) Haliburton Highlands (above). The low temperatures remain above normal and the highs are about average. Such an interesting weather pattern for the Highands. At least there’s some precipitation!

I’m not an expert on weather and since I’m only physically present (on and off) 4 months of the year I can’t say with great certitude but even so <exhale> it seems to me that the low temperatures in the Highlands are getting higher. I only really started paying attention to this late last winter/early spring and continued throughout the summer, and now fall. It still is holding true that the majority of the time, the low temperatures are above normal. The extended weather forecast graph is quite illustrative of how the difference between the high and low temperatures are less broad than one would expect. In fact, in the 14-day period  between October 13 and Oct 26 only ONE day–the 23rd has a predicted low temperature that is normal–all the rest are above!

It is fascinating, though I wonder what the cumulative effect will be if this pattern continues?
